Fragrance-Free vs. Unscented: What Is the Difference?

The short answer: fragrance-free generally communicates that fragrance has not been added. Unscented describes a product intended to have little or no noticeable scent, which may involve ingredients that mask other odors.
The terms are not interchangeable. A product can have a noticeable raw-material scent without added perfume, while an unscented product may contain fragrance materials.
What does fragrance-free mean?
The term generally signals the absence of added fragrance, but it is not a complete description of a formula. The FDA notes that terms such as fragrance-free do not have a federal standard or definition in the United States.
Read the ingredient declaration and the manufacturer’s explanation together. A front-label claim alone does not tell you everything about the product.
What does unscented mean?
An unscented product is intended to have little or no obvious smell. Some formulas achieve this with materials that cover the odors of other ingredients.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends fragrance-free products for dry-skin care and explains that unscented products may contain odor-masking ingredients.
If your goal is to avoid added fragrance, do not rely on the word unscented alone.
Why fragrance-free skincare can still smell
Oils, butters, and other cosmetic raw materials can have their own odors. A formula does not become odorless simply because perfume is omitted.
Amadeus uses materials such as grass-fed tallow, unrefined shea butter, rosehip seed oil, and jojoba oil. These can contribute to the finished cream’s scent.
A raw-material odor is different from an ingredient intentionally added to perfume a product.
Where essential oils fit
Essential oils can provide scent and contain fragrance compounds. Their natural origin does not mean that everyone will tolerate them.
For clear disclosure, ask two separate questions: has fragrance been added, and are essential oils present? Amadeus contains neither added fragrance nor essential oils.
How to read the label
Look for entries such as fragrance or parfum, as well as named essential oils and aromatic ingredients. FDA guidance explains that fragrance mixtures may be declared collectively as fragrance rather than listing each component.
The absence of the word fragrance is not a guarantee of suitability. If you need to avoid a specific substance, check the full declaration and ask the manufacturer when its presence is unclear.
Does fragrance-free mean hypoallergenic?
No. These are different claims. Fragrance-free does not guarantee that a product will be suitable for every person, and other ingredients may still cause an individual reaction.
The FDA also notes that hypoallergenic has no federal standard or definition. Neither term replaces checking the actual formula.
What Amadeus means by fragrance-free

This is a statement about the formulation, not a promise that the cream is odorless or universally tolerated. Examine the ingredient ledger and ingredient declaration for the disclosed materials.
